Brothers,

Two more of our brothers have joined the Ernie Schmidt Club since our July Paragon. We would like to thank Fred Epp ‘72 and Conrad Gosen ‘09 for committing to a monthly donation to the Ohio Alpha Beta Alumni Association. We also received a generous donation from Eric Dailing ‘08. Thank you, brothers!

Brothers Epp and Gosen are the 17th and 18th members of the Ernie Schmidt Club. If you sign up today as the 19th member, Ernie Schmidt Club members will have committed to donating more than $12,000 a year toward the support of the house. And with just a few new members beyond that more, we will be one fourth of the way to our goal of 85 Ernie Schmidt Club members by the 85th birthday of our chapter on May 31, 2026. Please join the Ernie Schmidt Club today via the website.

Whenever possible, we try to do work on the house with undergraduate or alumni volunteer work to stretch our donation dollars as far as possible. However, there are some projects that require specialized skills or tools that we have to hire contractors to do. Two of those projects were completed in the last month.

First off, we replaced windows in three different bedrooms. You will probably not be surprised to learn that a house built in 1915(ish) does not have standard sized windows that you can buy off the shelf. We had the windows for the 3rd floor bedrooms “Whiskey’s Roost” and “The Ballroom” and the basement bedroom “The Wine Cellar” custom made to fit and professionally installed. It’s a big improvement over having plywood covering holes!

Second, we had the range hood in the kitchen professionally cleaned. This had not been done in some years, in part because it is surprisingly difficult to find professionals who are interested in cleaning a commercial hood in a private home. Our intent is to have this work done annually going forward.

The Ohio Alpha Beta Alumni Association has been working to build good relationships with our neighbors on Magnolia. We’ve been proactively communicating with our next- door neighbors, the Hawken School, about upcoming projects and activities. As a result of this relationship building, our contacts at the Hawken School recommended the contractor we hired for the hood cleaning. We appreciate their help.

We have several more contractor projects that we are collecting estimates for, and if you live in Cleveland you can help. Do you have some flexibility during weekday business hours? We're putting together a group of Alumni Brothers who can assist by meeting contractors at the fraternity house for scheduled quotes and walk-throughs. Occasionally, interior access will be needed — but don't worry, we'll make sure you're fully prepared.

The time commitment is minimal — often just 30 minutes, and rarely more than a few hours. We’ll provide everything you need in advance: project details, contact info for the Housing Committee (always just a phone call away), and access to keys before your scheduled visit.

Your support will directly impact the upkeep and improvement of the house we all called home. Let us know if you can help — we’d be proud to have you on board. Reach out to Patrick Glynn at patrickglynn@ohioalphabeta.org if you are interested.
