https://www.ohioalphabeta.org/A Message from the President

Brothers,

We are now less than a month away from starting a new tradition for our Alumni Association, with the first election of 4 new officers to the Board of Directors. This election will take place on Saturday, May 11th at the chapter house, with a Zoom available for those members who cannot participate in person. Please watch for future emails with the Zoom details. Should we be in the happy situation where more than 4 brothers step forward to run for these important positions, we will use an online election tool such as Electionbuddy.com to enable those brothers who are remote to vote for the board positions.

These elections are an essential part of our path forward as an alumni association. We need more alumni brothers to be involved driving our efforts, and we need a mechanism to rotate members off of the board before the burn out. I also believe that the board needs the legitimacy that comes with winning an election to be able to honestly say that we represent the hundreds of alumni brothers of this chapter. If you are interested in serving on the board, or just in personally working on some of our efforts, please reach out to me at president@ohioalphabeta.org.

I would also like extend a personal welcome to our newly initiated brothers Jack Joseph, Jared Guadarrama, Danil Mosley, Will Chandler, and Alessandro Herrada. Congratulations, brothers!

If you’re on Instagram and want to see what our newly initiated brothers and our other undergraduate members are up to, don’t forget to follow the chapter Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/phikapcwru/.

Yours in the Bonds,

Nicholas DeCenzo

https://www.ohioalphabeta.org/Call for Volunteers: Homecoming 2024

Ohio Alpha Beta Homecoming 2024 will be held on Saturday, November 16th.

If you attended our Homecoming event last year, you know it was a success! Building upon this success, the Alumni Board has started discussing plans for this year's Homecoming, and came to realize that we're missing one key component: YOU!

We need your help to make Homecoming 2024 a memorable event for every attendee. If you are able to help in any way, we would love have you be part of the planning committee. Do you have fresh ideas you'd like to see at this year's event? Please share them with us!

Currently, there are 5 areas where we know we could use volunteers:

  1. Communications and Chairperson – You will act as the point person for the planning committee. Will generally track and coordinate the activities of the committee members, and communicate with external entities.
  2. Venue management - Determine event venue and plan the best way to utilize the space. This could involve finding an off-campus location, or figuring out how to best accommodate X number of people at the House.
  3. Food/catering - We need people to help plan and order food/drink/place settings, etc for the event. Will work closely with the Venue Management volunteer(s).
  4. Raffle - We need people to determine and acquire prizes, as well as coordinate ticket sales and run the drawing itself. Bonus if we can stream this over the web
  5. Historian – You will collect photos and create a slideshow (or perhaps just add onto the one we put together last year) to be shown at the event. If possible, also act as the photographer at the event.

Fortunately, much of the above can actually be done remotely, so you do not need to be a Cleveland local to help! To be part of the 2024 Homecoming planning committee, simply send a message to Ken Nagano (nagano@ohioalphabeta.org) and indicate which aspect of planning you're interested in the most. We are looking forward to hearing from you!

There are currently eight members of the board of the Ohio Alpha Beta Alumni Association. In this issue, we are pleased to introduce the driving force behind our 2023 Homecoming Dinner and many other events, our Social Chair, Ken Nagano.

Ken grew up in Springfield, Ohio. After graduating in 2001 with a bachelor's and master's degree in biomedical engineering, Ken remained in the Cleveland area and entered the workforce as a research scientist and software developer for a small startup company. While he honed his technical skills during the day, nights and weekends were often spent in the dance studio, as he trained and competed as an amateur dancesport athlete for a number of years.

In 2008, Ken tied the knot with a fellow dancer from Case. From there he moved out to the suburbs (Solon), had two daughters and generally attempted to figure out how adulting is supposed to work.

Sparked by homeownership and fueled by YouTube, it was around this time that Ken's interest in DIY home maintenance began. Some of the skills and tools he acquired during this time have also proven to be useful during our numerous Alumni Work Weekends.

After reestablishing ties with several alumni at Homecoming 2021 and being inspired by the active brothers, Ken is currently serving as a member-at-large for the Ohio Alpha Beta Alumni Association. He is also the social committee chairman, and a contributing member of the House Improvements and Finance committees.

And although Ken no longer competes, impromptu dance parties are not uncommon in the Nagano household.
